Visual Impairment

Description:

Visual impairment is the inability to see things normally. Some may see only see things near while others may only see things far away. Of course some can not see at all.

Cause:

Vitamin A deficiency and measles are the majorcauses of severe visual impairment/blindness in sub Saharan Africa in addition to cataracts. Trachoma (only exists in developing countries), glaucoma, macular degeneration, and severe refractive errors follow cataract as leading causes of blindness in countries like Kenya. Trauma, corneal scars of various causes, tuberculosis, and staphyloma (protrusion of any part of the globe of the eye) are also causes of blindness in the area. Some blindness is inherited genetically.

Treatment:

In some cases the treatment needed is simply provision of proper eyeglasses. In cases of cataracts, surgery is beneficial.

For children with complete blindness, they should attend a special school for the blind where they can learn brail and other ways of adapting to the seeing world.

Prevention:

The majority of blindness acquired during childhood could be avoided through provision of basic primary healthcare services.
