Kupenda for the children

Gede

Gede School for special needs is currently the only special needs unit that has a  boarding facility associated with it.   This will not be true as of January 2008 when the Marafa boarding facility will open it's doors.  Gede was started in 1997 by Leonard Mbonani (Kupenda coordinator) with a major objective of integrating those handicapped children in the regular school. Children with motor impairment mobility problems could not walk the distance between home and school. Children with hearing impairments but were too young to walk the distance from home to the school were also admitted in to the small home.

Housemothers take care of the children during the week and some go home on the weekends and holidays to be with their families if possible.   They are given three meals a day, physical therapy and specialized education for those who need it.   There are several children with only physical handicaps who attend the regular school (part of the same compound in which the Gede special needs school exists) but eat and stay overnight at the boarding facility in addition to receiving physical therapy.   There is a special unit for those with cerebral palsy and another for those with hearing impairments.

Kupenda supports this school through sponsorship of children to attend the boarding facility (~$200 USD per year), funding the occupational therapist, the cerebral palsy class teacher's aid, and constructing classrooms, supplying school furniture and materials and providing assistance equipment and medical attention.
